Behavioral Modification

Tibetan medicine utilizes a variety of techniques aimed at treating patients, including diet, herbal medicines, cupping, massage and acupuncture. However, one of the most relied upon treatments in Tibetan medicine involves a form of behavioral modification similar to that of modern behavior therapies practiced by today's psychologists.

Before any treatment is prescribed, the patient is analyzed by a Tibetan doctor who determines the nature of the problem. Many illnesses and conditions result from an imbalance of the humors (wind, bile and phlegm). once this imbalance has been identified, a combination of treatments is recommended. These treatments almost always include some sort of behavioral modification, be it meditation, counseling, exercise, or establishing healthy eating and sleeping habits.

To maintain health and vitality, and avoid contracting various maladies, Tibetan doctors recommend engaging in continuous healthy behaviors. Two main conditions that contribute to illness are identified: bad eating habits and unsuitable behavior. Unsuitable behavior covers a wide spectrum of behaviors, including over-consumption of alcoholic beverages, wearing inappropriate clothing for the current weather conditions, committing sexual misconduct, and engaging in excess chatter, be it verbal or in the mind. Other recommended behaviors include frequent bathing, getting adequate amounts of sleep and maintaining balance in all aspects of life. These behaviors help one to avoid becoming ill, or if one does experience illness, these behaviors quicken recovery time.

When one does experience illness, Tibetan doctors usually recommend some combination of more spiritual treatments such as counseling or meditation. Oftentimes, the patient needs to be spiritually advised and taught how to properly use these types of treatments. Many patients are taught yoga, in hopes that the combination of physical movement and meditation practices will ease afflictions. These techniques often see great success, especially among those suffering from mental illness.
